John Toomey

After a full and blessed life of 86 years, John C. Toomey passed away from natural causes on October 7, 2020. John valiantly battled Alzheimer’s disease for the final years of his life without ever giving up his fight until the very end. John is survived by his brother Jerry, children Kathi, Sean, Patrick, and Peter, as well as 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

John was born in the Rego Park neighborhood of Queens, New York on December 12th, 1933. He attended Forest Hills High School and NYU before entering the Navy and serving with the Fighting Seabees (CBs - Construction Battalions). During his final year of duty, he met and fell in love with his wife of 47 years, Joan Carroll. The two exchanged letters daily for the entire year before he returned home and married his bride on August 22nd, 1959. John and Joan had four kids while he worked as a contracts administrator in the aerospace industry that moved his young family to Maryland, Florida, and finally to Huntington Beach, California, where they would lay their roots in 1972.

John was a feisty and loving Irishman who worked hard to provide for his family. He set an example of love and devotion to Joan that was a blessing for all to witness. He was heavily involved at St. Mary’s by the Sea Catholic Church in Huntington Beach as an usher and founding member of the St. Vincent De Paul Society that provided community outreach and support for the homeless of his community. After retirement, he enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow and continued his volunteer work until his illness prevented him from participating. Despite his dementia, he always continued to display a love and concern for those around him and always had a kind word to say - never losing his strong New York accent.

John is preceded by his beautiful wife Joan, his sister Gloria Baumann, his brother Mickey, and his granddaughter Theresa. A funeral service will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Fullerton on Friday, October 16th at 10am followed by his interment with military honors at Good Shepherd Cemetery in Huntington Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the St. Vincent De Paul Society at St. Mary’s By The Sea in Huntington Beach.
