L. Paul Smith of Huntington Beach, CA passed on July 21, 2020, at his home. Until the very end, he was blessed with all the curiosity, the good cheer, and the kindness that made him the husband, the dad, the brother, and the friend we all loved through his entire life. His loving wife and lifelong companion Ginette, his three sons Eric, Patrick, and Martin, who were his pride and joy, and their wives Lisa, Elizabeth, and Pine, his dear grandchildren Amber, Corey, Connor, Wade, Max, Mike, and Luke, his sister Liane, his cousins, his nephews and nieces, and the many friends he made all mourn his passing. Yet the happy and fond memories of Paul’s too short presence in their lives will remain forever in their hearts.
Born in Montreal, Canada, on April 11th, 1941, Paul is the son of the late Charles Smith and the late Corinne Adam. After he graduated from Collège Stanislas, he studied at the University of Montreal and received his medical degree in 1965. He completed his postgraduate training in obstetrics and gynecology at McGill University and began his career as a physician and as a clinical professor at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal.
As early as the 1970’s, Paul was passionate about technological innovation and computer science, and his pioneering spirit took him and his family to the other side of the continent, to Southern California, in 1983. After he stopped practicing medicine, he became for the rest of his life a strong advocate of seniors’ rights, most notably within the California state chapter of the AARP.
Paul’s ties to his family and friends in Canada remained as strong as ever, even after 37 years. He was a Montrealer through and through, and he stayed deeply attached to the customs and even the dishes of his childhood: a visit to Montreal was not complete without having a smoked meat sandwich at Lesters, in his old neighborhood!
